Seven Cycles were born out of Merlin Metalworks. Officially started in 1997, around the time the Merlin were being taken over by Saucony, former Merlin founder Rob Vandermark left the Merlin base in Massachusetts and started Seven in Massachusetts. With the background that Rob has in Titanium he is regarded as one of the founders of the titanium bike.

Seven have opted for lower volume and higher workmanship approach in the bike industry and have earned a reputation for craftsmanship, quality and service which is second to none.

Seven Cycles have now branched out from their traditional titanium into carbon fibre and high end steel,

Merlin Titanium

It was over 25 years ago that Merlin Metalworks started producing the first titanium bicycle frames. Based out of Cambridge Massachusetts the company was set by Gwyn Jones, Gary Helfrich, and Mike Augspurger in 1986.

Using the best TIG welders they could get hold of they perfected the use of puddle bead surface welds to add a major aesthetic quality to the frame.

The famous mountainbiker Joe Murray was the first recipient of a Merlin titanium frame which he used to defend his national championships title. Merlin road bikes came with a tie up with renowned designer Tom Kellog followed by racing wheel chairs which allowed Bob Hall became the first ever wheelchair entrant in the Boston marathon.

In 1990 Merlin supplied the bikes to the Subaru Montgomery team of Lance Armstrong and Ken Carpenter. On the world stage Tour de France winner Greg Lemond rode Merlins while on the Z team.

In 1998 Merlin were aquired by sports brand Saucony which resulted in one of the founders , Rob Vandermark, leaving with many staff to set up Seven Cycles. Merlin were then sold to American Bicycle Group in 2000 to sit alongside other top manufacturers Quintana Roo, Litespeed and Real Designs in their stable.

Lemond Bikes

Lemond Bikes is the cycle business set up by former professional road racer Greg Lemond. In 1986, Greg LeMond became the first American cyclist to win the Tour de France but his elation was cut short when the following year he was shot and seriously injured in a hunting accident. He made a miraculous recovery and was able to return to the Tour de France in 1989, winning it dramatically in its final stage by the slimmest margin in the event's history from Frenchmen Laurent Fignon. He won again for the third time the following year of 1990 and is spoken of by many afficianados as one of the last clean winners of the Tour.
Lemond started Lemond Bikes in 1990 while he was still racing and partnered with Trek in 1992 to enhance the brand's distribution.

Lemond frame dimensions are designed differently from most production and custom bikes available today. Lemond seat tube angles are more relaxed and Lemond top tubes are longer than other frames of similar size. With Lemond's thinking in this area heavily influenced by studies carried out by his mentor Cyrille Guimard who was his first professional coach in France, The studies examined a rider's body position placement for optimum bio-mechanical and aerodynamic efficiency.

Riding static bikes in wind tunnels the testers measured power output, muscle effectiveness, heart rate, aerodynamics and perceived comfort. The tests provided very useful data on frame sizing, saddle height and body positioning relative to the bike's cranks and bottom bracket position.

The results showed that it is more efficient to pedal from "behind" the crank centre than in "front" so a rider should be sitting far enough back so they can push the pedals over the top of the stroke and then pull them through the bottom.

Spinergy Wheels

Spinergy wheels have been around since the early 90s and continue to outperform many other types of wheels in terms of acceleration and aerodynamics. Their RevX wheel was one of the most distinctive bicycle road and triathlon wheels ever made at a time when common thought recommended a disc wheel at the back and an aerospoke or trispoke at the front. With a pair of Spinergy RevX wheels a bike could be ridden fast in a cross wind and in a bunch quite safely.

Whereas Aerospoke wheels are currently as rare as hen's teeth there are a few Spinergy wheels around at the moment if you know where to track one down. They look great on Fixies, as either a front or as a pair and they still perform well in triathlons and time trials providing a cost effective way of getting a serious aero advantage over your rivals. And more importantly of all they look GOOD!
