De Rosa
De Rosa was set up by Ugo de Rosa in Milan in 1950s after a successful career as a racing cyclist. From his passion for bikes came a desire to study mechanical engineering at university which then led to him opening his first bike shop where he began the manufacture of racing bikes. His big breakthrough came in 1958 when the famous Raphael Geminiani asked him to build a bike for his next Giro d'Italia campaign. Ugo did such a good job that his bikes became a permanent fixture in the pro peloton during the 60s with the Faema team the first squadra to ride on De Rosas. In 1969 De Rosa started building for the Motta team as well. Around this time a certain Eddy Merckx started riding and winning on De Rosas and in 1973 De Rosa became the official frameset suppliers to the all conquering Molteni team as well as for Francesco Moser's Filotex team, a self titled De Rosa team led my world champion Moreno Argentin and Ariostea, a small team that soon became dominant on the pro circuit.

This success led to major demand for De Rosa bikes worldwide during the 70s and 80s which is good news for us retro fans and was good news for Ugo de Rosa who was joined in the expanding business by his three sons and a new larger premises. In 1990, as well as steel, De Rosa began researching titanium and came up with the Titanio which was used by the Gewiss team in 1994 with carbon fibre added in 1995 aluminium added in 2000.
