The split in 1926 led to the Dawes Cycles Limited that we know today being formed in its own right with the business taking off. In 1939 - 1945 the Dawes factory made bicycles for the armed services for war use and has supported a whole host of British racing cyclists over the years both road and off-road racing and touring.

The quality of Dawes production models has meant they have become benchmark products such as the Dawes Galaxy tourer, used the world over in some of the most demanding territory ever toured.

In the late 40s and early 50s, English cycling clubman, of which there were many, would very often buy factory-built bikes as the cost of a bike still cost many times the weekly wage. Brands such as Dawes became very popular as they were recognised for their quality and it was perceived as a manufacturer of bikes a cut above the
crowd. Dawes were always proud about their hand-brazed frames and they always liked to show that they used English parts for their frame with most of them based in the Midlands hence the reliance on the ever reliable Reynolds tubing.

From his passion for bikes came a desire to study mechanical engineering at university which then led to him opening his first bike shop where he began the manufacture of racing bikes. His big breakthrough came in 1958 when the famous Raphael Geminiani asked him to build a bike for his next Giro d'Italia campaign. Ugo did such a good job that his bikes became a permanent fixture in the pro peloton during the 60s with the Faema team the first squadra to ride on De Rosas. In 1969 De Rosa started building for the Motta team as well. Around this time a certain Eddy Merckx started riding and winning on De Rosas and in 1973 De Rosa became the official frameset suppliers to the all conquering Molteni team as well as for Francesco Moser's Filotex team, a self titled De Rosa team led my world champion Moreno Argentin and Ariostea, a small team that soon became dominant on the pro circuit.

This success led to major demand for De Rosa bikes worldwide during the 70s and 80s which is good news for us retro fans and was good news for Ugo de Rosa who was joined in the expanding business by his three sons and a new larger premises. In 1990, as well as steel, De Rosa began researching titanium and came up with the Titanio which was used by the Gewiss team in 1994 with carbon fibre added in 1995 aluminium added in 2000. Sure everyone's heard about Freddy Martens, Marc de Mayer, Walter Goodefroot and their names have gone down as legends in the cycling world while they were riding for Flandria. But did you know Flandria was the first big team to ride Shimano?
In 1973 the Japanese component manufacturer Shimano was keen to get into the European market but had achieved little success. The component market was pretty much owned by Italian and French manufacturers, so the idea of a Japanese manufacturer equipping professional bikes was considered laughable at the time.

Flandria already had a reputation as a progressive and forward thinking team willing to test new ideas so they struck a deal with Shimano. Their riders gave feedback and suggestions for improvement to Shimano while the Japanese company would develop a completely new set of components specifically for the Flandria team- And so the Dura Ace groupset was born. Originally set up in 1896 in Turin, Italy by Emmo Ghelfi he ran it all the way through the wars up until 1946. It was then acquired by Emilio Bozzi and run in Milan along with his much respected Legnano brand. During the political turmoil in Italy during the 1970s Emilio Bozzi was sadly assasinated by the Red Brigade and his family wanted no part in carrying on the company. The Frejus and Legnano brand names were acquired by Bianchi.
Occasionally Frejus bikes and spares come up for sale but it's rare. If you see one it won't be around for long as they are very sought after, especially in Britain, Italy and USA where the steel bikes are definitely in favour.

Sure there was Shimano coming through, sure there was other European groupsets in use, but if you knew you needed to have the most advanced, efficient and reliable groupset possible then it had to be Campagnolo Super Record.

Campganolo Super Record groupset was first introduced in 1973, based on designs from the earlier Record and New Record groupsets, which are highly sought after and exceedingly rare to find these days, Super Record groupsets went on sale in both road and track variants.

In 1978 the Super Record groupset underwent a major revision, in particular the rear derailieur switched from having the relief etched on the parallelogram to having Campagnolo written in black as is the case now.

In 1983 to celebrate the jubilee of Campagnolo a gold group of Super Record was produced, individually numbered and gold plated; if you can get one of these groupsets jump at the chance as it will be worth fortunes and is a real work of art.

In 1987 production of Super Record stopped and was replaced with C Record. In 2008 the Super Record groupset was revived for a new generation of cyclists. With more rear sprockets and ergo shifters rather than downtube shifters in the road version the groupset it is the first groupset to go to 11 sprockets. It is now also supplied with a carbon crankset and titanium axle.

In 1986, Greg LeMond became the first American cyclist to win the Tour de France but his elation was cut short when the following year he was shot and seriously injured in a hunting accident. He made a miraculous recovery and was able to return to the Tour de France in 1989, winning it dramatically in its final stage by the slimmest margin in the event's history from Frenchmen Laurent Fignon. He won again for the third time the following year of 1990 and is spoken of by many afficianados as one of the last clean winners of the Tour.
Lemond started Lemond Bikes in 1990 while he was still racing and partnered with Trek in 1992 to enhance the brand's distribution.

Lemond frame dimensions are designed differently from most production and custom bikes available today. Lemond seat tube angles are more relaxed and Lemond top tubes are longer than other frames of similar size. With Lemond's thinking in this area heavily influenced by studies carried out by his mentor Cyrille Guimard who was his first professional coach in France, The studies examined a rider's body position placement for optimum bio-mechanical and aerodynamic efficiency.

Riding static bikes in wind tunnels the testers measured power output, muscle effectiveness, heart rate, aerodynamics and perceived comfort. The tests provided very useful data on frame sizing, saddle height and body positioning relative to the bike's cranks and bottom bracket position.

The results showed that it is more efficient to pedal from "behind" the crank centre than in "front" so a rider should be sitting far enough back so they can push the pedals over the top of the stroke and then pull them through the bottom.

In 2005 they were bought out by the Finnish company Amer Sports who also own the brands Wilson, Suunto, Atomic, Precor and Salomon.
In the 1980s, before Mavic moved into carbon fibre wheel construction and system wheels they were famous for their exquisite groupset which was an alternative to Shimano, Campagnolo and Suntour at the time and their amazing rims. Mavic MA40s and Open Pro CDs were the staple of many classic lightweight racing bikes of the era. Mavic wheels are famous the world over as the wheels onboard the neutral service vehicle, a stroke of masterpiece PR by Bruno Gorman who realised that the whole world would see the Mavic wheels every time a breakaway went up the road and the neutral service car slotted into the gap behind them.

Originally started in Celle Ligure in 1938 by two time Milan San Remo winner Giuseppe Olmo along with his brothers Giovanni, Franco and Michele

With Giuseppe on board the company was well primed to know what the needs of those who face a tough climb, and a fundamental understanding of the basic characteristics that make a good bike a "fantastic" bike. It's why in years of endurance cycling Olmo still reach for technical merit, durability and strength with , extremely high levels of quality to meet all of the different needs.

Olmo still employ a system whereby a single person is responsible for the construction of each bike giving them a definite artisan feel rather than something that has come off of a production line.

Not a huge amount of Olmo bikes can be produced each year under this method. Of course Olmo employ modern methods such as computer aided design but these are strictly to aid the person building the bike and not to replace any of the artistic process. It's this attitude that keeps Olmo bikes amongst the most classic in the world.

Originaly Gios was only a small factory that produced mostly utility bikes, which then expanded over time. In 1959 Afredo Gios, the eldest son of Tolmino joined the company and was followed by his brother Aldo in 1966 . In 1968 Tolmin handed the running of the company over to his two sons.
In the early seventies Gios began production of high end racing bicycles and started to provide professionals road racers who competed in the major races in the world circuit providing Gios with an opportunity to prove themselves on the world stage.
In the 1980s Gios stepped back from the world of competitions only to enter it again later on, then patenting a specific type of adjustable rear dropout.

Gios frames are famous for being available in the colour Blue, like the heavenly Celesete colour of Italian frame producer Bianchi, except Alfredo Gios is quoted as saying "Like Henry Ford I will sell you a bike in any colour you want... as long as it's blue!"
