It is identical to the individual sprint but rather it includes 6-9 individuals on the velodrome rather than the traditional a pair.
Now the weird bit- the cyclists follow behind a little moped type cycle known as a derny. This particular derny leads out the cyclists in the first few circuits of the event. The derny continuously raises momentum before getting out in the middle of the velodrome with 2.5 laps to run, allowing the competitors to sprint toward the end. With the amount of bikers taking part in what is really a sprint race, typically there are typically incidents close to the ultimate laps.
For that reason the keirin is wonderful! Keirin racing in Japan start with all 8 compeitors cycling round to the blocks, bowing when they start to enter into the velodrome in addition to yet again whilst they align the bikes in preparation of the start for this race.
